Why aluminium is one of the most sustainable materials we work with

Timeless designs with lasting impact

Design that enhances human experience

Aluminium can be recycled endlessly without losing quality. Here's how INEX puts that to work, from our closed-loop recycling partnership to our ASI certification.

Aluminium has a property that makes it almost unique among common materials: it can be recycled again and again without losing quality. Every can, extrusion or offcut that goes back into the loop comes out the other end just as good as new metal. That single fact shapes a lot of how we think about sustainability at INEX.

‍

A genuine closed loop, not just a claim

We're the only extruder in New Zealand that recycles aluminium scrap directly to the smelter at Tiwai Point, working with New Zealand's only aluminium producer so nothing goes to waste. Billets come in, we extrude them into profile, any scrap generated along the way is baled and sent back to the smelter, and it returns as new billet ready to go again. It's a genuinely closed loop, not an offset or a certificate bought after the fact.

‍

Backing it up with the numbers

A few figures we hold ourselves to:

  • 100% of our aluminium scrap is recycled at Tiwai Point.
  • 100% of our manufacturing electricity is offset with renewables.
  • 98.4% of our waste was diverted from landfill in 2025.

‍

Independently certified

Our extrusion operations are certified against the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) Performance Standard, the first in New Zealand to hold that certification. It's an independent check on responsible sourcing, environmental performance and social practice, not something we assess ourselves.

Sustainability is also about people and process

None of this works without the people running it day to day, or the suppliers we work with. We hold every supplier to our Supplier Code of Conduct, and we report annually on our environmental and safety performance so our progress is measured, not just stated.
